Löffler

The eldest ancestor, I could find out, was George Lefler who died in 1721. In the church records of Königswalde he is recorded as “gardener and former steward in Königswaldt”, aged 65. The name Löffler, Loeffler, Leffler, Lefler was very common in the former county of Neurode in the places Königswalde, Ludwigsdorf, Eule, Krainsdorf, Neurode. In the “Silesian Name Book” of Hans Bahlow, you find the meaning of the name (“Löffel = spoon, transl.): “The spoonmaker was a (wood)turner, because in the middle ages the spoons were made of wood.”

In the “Glatzer Steuerrolle von 1653 für den Kreis Wünschelburg“ (taxe register of the county of Wünschelburg) Mertin Leffler and Jacob Leffler are registered for the „Dorff Losdorf“ (village of Losdorf), Ludwigsdorf. The “Chronik der Stadt Neurode” (chronicle of the town of Neurode) of Dr. Joseph Wittig (Professor of the Breslau University) mentioned a Jakob Löffler from Hausdorf for the time of 1434 – 1440.
